A brief word about the term ?Pycnogenol?

The word ?pycnogenol? (Organic Pycnogenol Compound, or OPC) was first introduced by Dr. Jack Masquelier in 1979 to describe a group of natural compounds (proanthocyanidins) he wanted to identify separately. In that flavonols have a tendency to join together, he used "pycno" from the Greek meaning ?to come together? or ?thicken,? ?gen? meaning ?to generate,? and ?ols? from flavonols. Without Dr. Masquelier's knowledge and contrary to his wishes, Horphag Research Ltd., representing themselves as the ?owner? of the word, illegally obtained a U.S. trademark for the word ?Pycnogenol.? The trademark applies only to Horphag's pine bark extract. Legal process is currently underway to cancel Horphag's trademark registration in the U.S.
