Passage of FDA Reform Legislation Protects Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements were specifically excluded from consideration under the final version of the FDA Reform Bill that was passed last week. This means that everyone who benefits from dietary supplements can breathe a sigh of relief. Remarked Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) emphatically, "the bill does not undo the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in any way and dietary supplements will remain what they are, food products, not drugs."

The so-called "harmonization language" and "CODEX provisions" of the FDA Reform Bill have recently stirred up a froth of fear and confusion. Some people felt this language would result in stricter laws concerning the distribution of dietary supplements -- laws which would eventually prevent consumers from being able to get dietary supplements.

With the FDA Reform Bill finally passed in both the House and Senate, these fears can be put to rest -- at least for a while.

We appreciate the vigilance and efforts of our many distributors who voiced their opposition to the Codex provisions in the FDA Reform Bill. Your activism and grass- roots response makes it harder for large commercial interests or government lobbies to curtail our access to dietary supplements.
