Introduction to HerbalismHerbs are plant food substances. This is not a scientific definition; it is a practitioner’s definition. It is used by the people who make recommendations about how to build better health naturally. If a person uses herbs (like you) they are an herbal practitioner. Herbs have been used since people began eating. They are not new, and they were used long before there were people who called themselves doctors or scientists. They worked then, and they still do. A vast amount of information concerning what herbs to use for what purpose was intuitive, and some trial and error was involved as people sought out what helped them. What we now have is an impressive list of plants that build better health. There is a solution to every physical problem. It was meant to be that way; it is not experimental. The great religions of the world say much and give much information about the use of herbs. It is widely accepted that foods do alter the structure and function of the human body. Herbs are natural food medicines in that respect. In this sense the offerings of this volume are intended as an addition to the diet for that purpose. They can, and do, alter the structure and function of the body favorably. If a disease goes away then the person has been benefited by a change of diet. When one dissolves the substances of a plant in a liquid such as water it is called a tea (or water extract). When other liquids are used it is known as an extract if it is intended to be used as a food. It is known as a tincture if its intended use is of a different nature. An extract is not a concentration, but rather a dilution of the herb in a liquid. It is far more effective because the contents of the plant material are in effect “predigested” and much more available for instant absorption (“bioavailable”). The use of herbs to build health may take a long time. Some effects are instantaneous, but some of the best results come after years of use. If this seems too much to pay for a healthy body, just think how much better you will be after a year or even ten years. Think what you would be like in a year or ten years without the use of herbs. These materials are given to you so that you may have the knowledge to build better health naturally. The following subjects are in this section:
